Media Madness
Every once in a while there’s so much funny stuff in the media that I just have to sit and howl. Not one of these is worthy of an entire post on its own, but each is worth a little hoot. So here goes: Houston Chronicle, Friday, June 12: Houstonbelief.com members are engaged in a [...]
The Six O’Clock Parent (Mother’s Day Special Rehash)
You’ve had a really bad day. One child is sick, the other three are getting there. Little ones who are about to be sick are easy to spot—they’re the ones who are completely out of control. They don’t feel good, you see, so they take it out on you. By six o’clock, you are at [...]
Don’t Tell Me Your Pregnancy Horror Stories! (Sunday Rehash)
However, there is a far more insidious reason. They have come from far and wide, traveling both ways uphill in the snow, to enlighten you. You are about to become the victim of the PREGNANCY HORROR STORY.
The Buttinskis
I cannot think of any other profession (aside, perhaps, from politics) where total strangers feel free to walk up to you on the street and inform you that you are incorrect. Not once, while I was masquerading as a doctor, did a person of my non-acquaintance flag me down in Target and tell me that [...]
You’re Not Alone, You’re Just a Loner-Sunday Rehash
Do you cringe when your child comes home from school with a party invitation? Do you come home from your kid’s play dates more exhausted than he is? Do you duck and hide when you run into other mothers at the grocery store? You’re not alone. Really, you’re not. You’re just a loner. According to [...]
Pregnant Busybodies-Sunday Rehash
(Originally published 1/23/09) There’s something about a pregnant woman that invites everyone she meets to talk to her. People who never spoke to her for the seven years that she has shared an elevator with them suddenly have a vested interest in her health, her pregnancy, and her life. So, since the constant heartburn, unrelenting [...]
That Rosy Glow? It’s Heartburn
Much has been written about the signs and symptoms of pregnancy. Nausea, for instance, warrants chapters in pregnancy books. Not that it doesn’t deserve those chapters. The increased sex drive of the second trimester earns volumes, all by itself. Why? Because despite the advances women have made in the field in the last hundred years [...]
Sunday Rehash–Pregnancy Rots Your Brain
The hormones of pregnancy, I discovered, kick in very fast. I know this, because seconds after announcing that I was, indeed, pregnant, I became a complete imbecile. While moments before, I was a smart, competent professional, my husband now knew that I needed him to take care of me. I was unable to make even the smallest decision without his input.
It isn’t really his fault. The testosterone that runs the male brain starts screaming, “protect.” Feminism runs headlong into ten thousand years of social and biological evolution, and loses, every time.
Is modern life making women “Ignorant and Ill-equipped?’
Here’s the headline from a review of a scientific paper on Physorg.com:
“Modern Life—making women ‘ignorant and ill-equipped’ to cope with motherhood.”
I had to click on that one. Mostly because we live in the ‘information age.’ There are a billion web-sites out there with parenting advice (NO, I’m not the only one. And some of them are even SERIOUS).
Mothers of Older Children
One more predator—the mother of older children (MOOC).
This woman preys on younger moms, giving her “advice” liberally. Freely.
Not that there’s anything wrong with giving advice. She’s been there. She KNOWS.
It’s what the advice IS that may be problematic.
