Breast Feeding, Toddler Style

I think that all kids need is to see some women in public and in private engaged in the act. Then no one will care. Besides, donning a vest and pretending to breastfeed doesn't really "teach" kids how to do it. And you know what? NO ONE NEEDS TO LEARN until they have to (or choose to) do it themselves.

I think breastfeeding is great, natural and should be no big deal in society. That said, I think the nazi La Leche people have lost their minds with this one. Yet another stupid doll that "acts" like a real baby so our kids don't have to apply their precious imaginations. Besides, I don't live on some Guatemalan hillside – I don't want my girls training for this "Inevitable" future. Sorry Spain, the Catholic church doesn't control our birth rates (though they try…)

I will pass. Somehow my toddler will have to do without.

Admittedly, I was frustrated by my own lack of milk flow to my breasts until long after my children saw them as a path to frustration and refused to have anything more to do with them.

I think it's stupid. I don't think having a toddler breastfeeding vest is likely to contribute much to teenage pregnancy, truthfully, but then I also don't think it will convince teenagers to breastfeed in Algebra or anywhere else it might be embarrassing.

When it comes to kid toys, it doesn't make much sense to me (unless Mommy is breastfeeding my new sister/brother and gave me a doll to help cope with not being the center of attention. Then it can almost make sense, but the vest is likely unnecessary). However, I think lots of toys don't make sense (like transformers) so you can't go by me.

it's as if as parents collectively we want to give our children every experience under the sun before they hit the double digits. My question is what will be left except to end up spoiled rotten or total adreneline junkies? All that will be left is to make all kinds of trouble at the mall and have babies and end up really breastfeeding – so little left to the imagination! When my older daughter was 3, she used to hold her doll up to her chest and when I was breastfeeding her sister… it was so cute!

The only thing that bugs me about the doll is that kids will do that anyhow if they see it. Kids are great imitators. I'd rather they pretend to breastfeed with just any old doll or even a stuffed animal (as both my son and my daughter did) than with a doll made for the purpose. Why force their imaginations?

And yeah, the vest is stupid.

But I don't think pretending to breastfeed a doll will contribute to teen pregnancy or other such issues. It's all a part of caring for a baby, which toddlers love to pretend to do anyhow.

Well, we've got dolls on the market that spit up and urinate–which I also find appalling–so I can't say that I'm shocked that some bozo thought this one up.

What ever happened to imaginative toys? Why do toys have to simulate every stinkin' aspect of our lives?

Next we will have dolls marketed to children that demonstrate how mommy and daddy made them–all in the name of being yet another "lovely, natural act."

The whole idea that we have to expose our children to every little experience on the planet before the age of ten or we are close-minded, stifling, and quasi-abusive people is tiresome.

Okay. So last weekend I was at the airport. And here comes mom with her girl-toddler in stroller. And girl-toddler has a baby doll placed under her shirt as if she's breastfeeding her doll. I gotta say — it was a little weird. And my 8 year old son? Yup. He didn't think too highly of that.

I wish I'd known about this doll when I was nursing my youngest. Her then-two-year-old sister didn't want to stop at trying to nurse the doll when mommy nursed the baby. She wanted to get ahold of the real baby and nurse her. Being the mean Mommy that I am, I never let her, but I would have given her this doll in a heartbeat. (Of course, a year and a half later, we're still having relationship identity issues. Yes, she's my stister. Yes, she's your daughter. She's my daughter, too. I can tell her what to do and spank her when she doesn't obey me.)

My 2nd son was 4 when my daughter was born. He was quite observant AND imaginative. He found the end of a 2liter bottle, slapped it on his chest, and said "Hey, Mom, look. It's my breast pump!" I have pictures. At 16 now, they may come in quite handy for blackmail purposes.

And continuing with the whole Breastfeeding Gone Wild theme – we vacationed in Michigan last week. On a billboard, we saw "Michigan Families Breastfeed". How exactly does that work?

Well that doll is just wrong. Period, it's wrong. There is no need for a doll to go beyond the acting and into the graphic.

I'm totally pro-breastfeeding and got the look with both kids when I breastfed in public. Never out in the open, always nicely covered with a blanket, very much, but still makes people uncomfortable. I think I am one of very few I know anymore that did breastfeed both kids.

But this doll disgusts me and honestly I think it belittles breastfeeding.

When I nursed baby number 2 and 3 the toddlers naturally "nursed" their baby dolls too. Even my son. So what? I just never made a big deal about it nor used it as a teachable moment to cement the benefits of lactation in their tiny toddler minds. It was just matter of fact, and I didn't feel like a failure when breastfeeding didn't work as well with the last 3. You just do what works in each unique situation.
The creepy part of the breastfeeding dolly is the Vest- I bet that ends up at the bottom of the toy box real quick.
