Circumcision, Anyone?
There are a few dilemmas that affect the parents of boys a bit more often than the parents of girls.
That’s because there actually ARE differences between little boys and little girls.
I know. You’re shocked, right?
For instance, do you let them grow their hair out, just because they loved Lord of the Rings and everybody in LoTR wore their hair long, and all the girls were madly in love with either Aragorn or Legolas?
Or the eternal question of ear piercing. Not so much if, as one side or two, and does it matter which side?
And every parent of a brand new boy is faced with the circumcision question. Every dad of every brand new boy is absolutely convinced that he knows the answer. Moms are occasionally not so convinced.
[I didn't have a choice in the matter. I married a Jew. I was, however, appalled. There's an old Jewish custom wherein the women at the brit get the mom drunk, so she doesn't notice the horrors being perpetrated on her young son. One of those few customs that I really, truly appreciated.
And I made sure that the mohel was a pediatrician, capable of giving a dorsal penile block.]
So you probably already know where I stand on this issue.
First, a little history.
The Torah requires circumcision of all Jewish infants. Anthropologists and historians chalk it up to a blood sacrifice, perhaps as a more humane concept than, say, infanticide, which was a prevailing ritual at the time in other cultures. The Jews weren’t the only religious group that had begun circumcision as a ritual event–it was fairly common among all the Semitic peoples, especially in Egypt.
[The oldest image of any surgical procedure is on the wall of a tomb from Sakkara, Egypt, dating from the 6th dynasty (2345-2183 BCE). It depicts a circumcision.]
Early Christians, with their Hellenistic bent (the Greeks found circumcision distasteful, since it left men completely naked), threw out the circumcision requirement with the dietary laws. Islam readopted the circumcision, although it is only mandatory in some sects.
But in America, circumcision was reinvented in the early 1900s as part of the great prudery movement that overtook the continent. It was widely believed that circumcision decreased sexual desire (by exposure of the most sensitive part and therefore desensitization), and decreased pubescent masturbation.
The great Dr. John Kellogg (yes, he of the corn flake–and the graham cracker!) was one of the biggest prudes advocates of circumcision. He also believed in painful aversion therapy for masturbators. And built really cool contraptions known as anti-masturbation harnesses.
And so the great American circumcision movement was born. By the 1930s, half of all men were circumcised. In the 1970s, virtually all.
Except for religious reasons, circumcision is RARELY performed outside of the US and English-speaking regions of Canada. It is the single most commonly performed unnecessary surgery in the world.
And anytime one reads the words “unnecessary” and “surgery” in the same sentence, it should cause massive cortical activation.
Proponents claim that circumcision decreases the transmission of STDs. Which is true. Recent results show that HPV, HSV-2 and AIDS transmission is decreased by circumcision, by rates of 30-50%. This is probably related to giving the viruses a convenient hiding place, although some studies have suggested that there are specialized cells on the inside of the foreskin that tend to harbor disease.
But is a decrease in transmission of venereal diseases that he hopefully won’t even get really enough reason to circumcise your child? Maybe we could just staple a condom on (because, regardless of what the Pope says, they really do decrease the transmission of STDs. Duh).
As far as HPV, you’re not protecting him so much as you’re protecting his sexual partners (HPV is the virus that causes cervical cancer). And I know, you REALLY don’t want to think about that when he’s a newborn. But that’s the only REAL medical rationale.
The official American Medical Association position: “Virtually all current policy statements from specialty societies and medical organizations do not recommend routine neonatal circumcision, and support the provision of accurate and unbiased information to parents to inform their choice.”
You have been provided with accurate and unbiased (mostly) information. Go forth and choose wisely.

I don’t disagree with your position. I only know what I was told. My father was circumcised because his father – and I quote – “got an infection as an adult and had to be circumcised as an adult”. I have no idea of the actual facts, since it was before my time and both my father and grandfather are dead.
But my son is circumcised. He is, aside from not talking or really doing anything on command, the healthiest child on earth. But I’m pretty sure the circumcision has nothing to do with it.

Keep in mind that this was WAY before antibiotics. Also, in that time frame, doctors took EVERY opportunity to take the foreskin off. At least in America.
It’s sort of like saying you can’t wear contacts, because your great-grandmother had an eye infection.

Whether to circumcise was one of the biggest disagreements my husband and I have had. I was adamantly opposed to it. It was the old “he should look like all the other boys” argument, which I lost. (And I still get upset about it.)

My husband sometimes forgets to brush his teeth. I’m rather glad he doesn’t have a little hidey-hole for bacteria that is going to invade areas of my body that are rather susceptible to bacteria. Because one of the best parts about monogamy has been THROWING AWAY THE CONDOMS. And he doesn’t need any more sensitivity there, dear dog.
I had a hard time doing this to my son, however, and wouldn’t have, but Dad was rather insistent. I wrongly thought he would spend more time potty training and showing son what to do with all that, so I let him choose.
But NO. It has been MOM who potty trained. MOM who taught him how to aim. MOM who explained that he can’t play with it in front of girls SO GO TO YOUR ROOM TO DO THAT. And shut the door, please.
So I don’t know what the big damn deal was, anyway.

We didn’t circumcise. My husband was circumcised, because it was the 70s and I’m pretty sure they did it routinely. We’re not Jewish, and we didn’t see any medical reason. I am a fairly crunchy sort, and prefer to avoid any newborn procedures that aren’t strictly necessary, so that played into my decision.
I’m aware of the studies showing a decrease in some disease transmission, but I think the combination of HPV vaccines and safer sex practices is far more reliable. I certainly wouldn’t tell my circumcised son NOT to worry about STDs, you know?

Doesn’t matter either way, IMO. I left the decision up to my husband & if we ever have a boy, his decision will stand. I don’t disagree with your position at all, but it’s not akin to genital mutilation. The boys will thrive either way.
And no one needs to cry about it ! Um… except the baby.

I went with personal issues. We wanted him to look like hubby so that is easy decision. But also my best friend has had horrible issues with STD’s because her hubby is not.
So that was my decision maker and I’m still glad I made it as I have to I can’t help my issue that my grandma passed away from cervical cancer at only 35 and they have yet to decide how best to prevent it.
Since my best friend had issues recently I will stick to my guns that we made correct decision. Although it was definitely difficult and I wish I’d had religion to knock momma out! lol

I have 4 boys and they were all circumcised. When pregnant with the oldest I decided to leave the decision up to the husband. He is Jewish and has a penis so I thought it should be his call. If left up to me I would have voted no. By the time we had the 3rd he was rethinking his decision but we felt they should all be “the same”. As for long hair and earrings, these are arguments I don’t wish to have. One of the boys donated his hair to locks of love and one has both ears pierced. No tattoos until their 18 though.

Husband is, son is not. Not sure they’ve seen each others privates since son was 2. I think I’ll text him right now to see how it’s worked out for him.
Since he better not be having sex without a condom until he’s married, has health insurance and a substantial savings account the STD’s should not be an issue.

I totally agree with your post. When I had my son I was still fairly young and going with that whole submit to your husband idea. I felt so guilty when they did that to him, the idea of it just made me sick.
I am glad the other three are girls so I didn’t have to make that decision ever again. I could totally see my ex saying ‘everybody needs to look the same’ and my crunch attitude being that noone needs to be mutilated as an infant.
Luckily we haven’t had to have discussions on hair or earrings yet, although my ex-mil did cut his hair while he was there because she thought it was too long. He was trying to grow a faux-hawk. Oh well…

I let my husband decide, and he wanted to have our son circumcised. I would have said no.
As for long hair, I don’t mind the idea at all. My father-in-law would throw a fit if our son ever grows his hair out. Ex-Marine, retired banker does that, I think. I see that kind of thing as pretty harmless. Hair can be cut, earrings can be taken out.

ha! I had to laugh when I read your tags ; )
The long hair sure is in right now, isn’t it?!? I saw 4 boys at the park today with hair just a couple inches about their shoulders. It’s kind of cute, I think.
We were in favor for circumcision for our children because we liked the idea that it was a symbol and reminder of God’s covenant with Abraham. Our reasons didn’t really extend past that at all.
Thank you for your well thought out post on my blog. I appreciate it!

Great post. I’ve read most of this information before, but it’s so nice to read it nicely summarized in chronological order. My oldest son is circumcized and my youngest is not. I had 15 years betweeen to educate myself and try to weed out the biased information on both sides. Of course, most of the fifteen years I really wasn’t expecting to have another boy, so I wasn’t actively researching. Dad recently read a mainstream article that was heavily biased towards circumcision to prevent STDs and it alarmed him. He had actually refused to weigh in with an opinion when it was being decided; and deferred to my medical and maternal expertise. I still say if the boy wants the benefits of circumcision he can make that decision when he becomes sexually active.
BTW, I did let my oldest grow his hair out everytime he wanted to. He didn’t appreciate strangers assuming he was my daughter though.

I just read through these comments. I cannot believe that any rational person would view circumcision and removal of the clitoris as the SAME.
Being circumcised hasn’t brought my husband any sexual problems. But I’m guessing women without clitorises will always find sex rather lacking.
Now I have to put down the computer and walk away. Before I get angry.

I don’t think anyone actually tried to compare the two, at least not in these comments. The fact is that female genital mutilation (female genital cutting) IS referred to as female circumcision.
And the two do have points of similarity. They are both perpetrated on children too young to object, and they are both done for reasons of ancient customs that are completely irrelevant in modern life.
That is where the similarity ends, however; male circumcision is a nuisance and unnecessary, but I don’t think anyone but the most radical anti-circumcision folks would consider it “mutilation.” The female version, however, clearly is. We’ll get to that later in Ancient Egypt (two weeks, I think).
As for sex, it varies. Many women can have orgasms without the clitoris, and a large percentage of women who have had clitoridectomies do report orgasm. It seems to relate mostly to whether she feels mutilated, or embraces it as part of her customs. Obviously, female orgasm involves more psychology (as opposed to physiology) than male orgasm.

I agree with almost everything you said, except one thing: Circumcision is routinely performed on newborn baby boys in Italy, too. I was lucky enough to have two girls so I didn’t have to decide on this – I’m leaning strongly towards no, except for one thing which happened to me with a non-circumcised man which freaked us both out. Already TMI, so I’ll stop there. You’re welcome

This is so interesting! I knew the whole Jewish history, but had no idea about the whole American prudence-driven thing. How freaky! I don’t want to mitigate my poor son’s sexual drive or anything, but we circumcised him. Mostly because that’s just what’s done, you know? His dad is and most of our religion is (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) since our history is Jewish history….

I had my son circumcised because I was a child of the 70 and everyone had one. Everyone except for a childhood friend’s older brother who decided I needed to see what “it” looked like. I had seen them before but this was different since it was not circumcised. Different as in “wow! that is really weird looking” and then his mother came out of the house and threw a shoe at him.
I don’t recall thinking about it too much honestly. I wanted my son to look like everyone else but by then people were not having it done automatically. He has told me he prefers it this way however. I don’t know how he would know what to base that statement on but there it is. He also wants his ears pierced and his hair is fairly long, and blue. As long as he doesn’t pierce his penis I really don’t care.

Wow. This post and the comments have really made me think! My first husband is and he always wanted sex. My son with him is, also. My husband now, is not and never wants sex (I guess the point wasn’t desire, rather it was sensitivity, huh?). My son with him is, too. Honestly, the main reason I wanted him circed was because of the cleanliness. I seriously didn’t want to spend most of his childhood days reminding him to “pull back the skin and wash there, too”.
Sometimes my husband’s gets smelly. TMI??? Ya, probably.

Girls do some pretty stupid things with their hair, too. It’s good for blackmail pictures when they’re older, right?

I’m in the UK and I can honestly see I have never seen a circumcised penis, and think the very idea is just weird. In real life, I mean. I’ve seen pictures. I like being with men who aren’t (although not if they haven’t washed – that stench is one of the worst), and I just can’t see that it would be as easy to stimulate them manually without that skin. Pics of circed ones are always a bit shocking to me because I can see where they were chopped and there is quite a lot of skin removed. They also look fairly disgusting to me – the skin being all hard and the wrong colour, when the glans is supposed to be pink and moist. They look mulitated, simply because of what I’m used to.
I would not do that to my boys, if I ever had children. That would simply not be negotiable. If my hypothetical son wanted it done as an adult, that would be entirely up to him.

The idea that there's something wrong with human penis is madness. Foreskin is part of the package, it protects the glans and is a mucous membrane also, extremly erogenous. The natural penis is designed to work with a foreskin. It defies logic to claim a circumcised is better. The ide of foreskin collecting bacterias and other stuff is myth. 80% of men in the world are intact and don't have anu problems. Hygiene = soap+water not amputation.
Circumcision is just a cure searching searching for a disease; HIV being the latest candidate. Why US has the highest rate of circumcision and AIDS ?
